GANIL User Group (GUG) is a democratic, self-organising community linking together people interested in using research facilities of GANIL. The goal of this community is to exchange experiences and ideas to ensure the best possible outcome of the tests, experiments and studies run in GANIL. The group is recognised officially by the GANIL Management and its representative is part of the GANIL Scientific Council, ensuring that ideas emerging from the group’s discussions are properly considered by the GANIL management. More about the representative body of the GANIL User Group in “What is GUEC”. Anyone can become a member of the GANIL User Group! For more information see: “How to become a member of GANIL User Group”. To learn more about the privileges the membership guarantees see: “What are the privileges”
What is GUEC?
GANIL User Executive Committee (GUEC) is the representative body of the GANIL User Group (GUG) to the GANIL management. It assists the management in developing an ambitious scientific program for GANIL. In consultation with the GUG, the GUEC gives advice on developments of infrastructure, detectors, operation, and both short-term and long-range planning of campaigns. Furthermore, the GUEC organises annual meetings of the GANIL User Group, and coordinates the editorial board of the GANIL Annual Report. The chairperson of the GUEC serves as ex-officio member of the GANIL Scientific Council, and he/she confers on a regular basis with the chairpersons of the Program Advisory Committee and the GANIL Scientific Council. The GUEC constitutes eight members. Four of them are elected for four-year term in an online vote of the GANIL User Group, with one position reserved specifically for a representative of theoretical physicists. The second half of the committee is nominated. Two persons are chosen by the GANIL and CIMAP (Center of Research on Ions Materials and Photonics) directorates. The other two are nominated by the collaborations around in-house and travelling detectors. For more information about these collaborations see: “Collaborations”. The list of the past and present GUEC members is available in: “GUEC members”. To ensure an active dialog between GANIL Users and their representatives, all users are welcome to contact the committee members individually or by email to: guec@ganil.fr. Your feedback is priceless as it helps both the GUEC members and the GANIL management to shape the scientific program for GANIL.
History
GANIL User Group was formed as one of the tasks within the EU-funded Horizon 2020 project called “IDEAAL” (The International Development of gAnil-spirAL2 project). The main goal of the project was to prepare GANIL to fulfil a new role of an international research facility. The change was critically needed, as the construction of the SPIRAL2 (Système de Production d’Ions Radioactifs en Ligne de 2e generation) laboratory was nearing the end. The SPIRAL2 laboratory would be providing unique worldwide radioactive beams and in the time of applying for Horizon 2020 funds, an increase of scientific community interest in conducting research in GANIL had been already observed and foreseen to rise further. One of the goals of the project was to deepen involvement of the users in developing the scientific program. As a result in late 2017, a GANIL User Group was formed and a dedicated platform to register as a member was launched. In the mid-2018 the first election of the GUEC members was run. In October the same year the first meeting of the community was held in Caen. In May 2019 additional vote for a theory representative to the GUEC was conducted. In September 2019 a special GUEC session took place during the Colloque GANIL conference, where a winner of the GANIL PhD prize chosen by the GUEC was announced. In 2020 a new GANIL User Group webpage was launched.
How to become a member of GANIL User Group
GANIL User Group is open to everyone. To become a member, please register here: https://u.ganil-spiral2.eu/portal. Please note, that if your email address is from a recognized institutional domain, the process of registration is automatic. If it is not recognized, you’ll be contacted by an administrator for additional verification. During the registration process you can choose fields of interest and measurement systems significant to you. This ensure you won’t miss any information relevant to you, be it about dedicated workshops to one of the detector systems or about an open position in your field!
What are the privileges?
As a member of the GANIL User Group you can take an active part in forming the future of GANIL and make sure your needs are heard properly as you have a strong representation in the form of GUEC. Additionally, you get both the active and passive voice rights in the GUEC elections. You gain also access to GANIL User newsletter and specific mailing lists regarding you field and instruments of interest. If that isn’t enough for you, please contact GUEC with your ideas how to make GANIL User Group more helpful and friendlier for users. We are striving for constant improvement!
