Electrostatic Ion Beam Trap: A versatile tool for molecular ion study

Oded Heber – Department of Particle Physics and Astrophysics – Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot Israel

Seminar organized by the CIMAP laboratory

The Electrostatic Ion Beam Trap (EIBT) was introduced more than 20 years ago as a tool for molecular ion research. The main features like unlimited molecular mass storage, large field free region and   beam directionality, made the EIBT a versatile tool for molecular ions study.

In this talk, the basic principles of EIBT will be presented. A special kind of a high-resolution mass spectrometry with an added dimension of time will be demonstrated. This will followed by a study of the molecular internal dynamics processes for heavy molecules and clusters. Among them, the isomerization process of a linear C10- to a ring structure will be shown. Finally, ion – ion interaction within the EIBT will be utilized for beam cooling and for future molecular reaction study by merged beam in a Hybrid EIBT.
