Dynamique longitudinale à fort champ accélérateur, ce qui change, exemple du linac SPIRAL2 / Longitudinal beam dynamics at high accelerating field, what changes, SPIRAL2 linac example

J. M. Lagniel (GANIL, Caen, France)

(English version)

The longitudinal beam dynamics is complex in rf linacs, at first because the focusing is nonlinear since done by sinusoidal electric fields. The smooth approximation, valid at low accelerating rates (dW/W << 1), nevertheless allows a good description and understanding of this dynamics; this is what is usually taught in accelerator schools and books. When superconducting cavities are chosen to use high accelerating fields the smooth approximation is no longer valid, the longitudinal beam dynamics is no longer the one we know. Even simple notions such as synchronous phase and transit time factor must be reconsidered. The nonlinear focusing can also excite resonances degrading the beam qualities, even without space-charge; to stay safe the linac designs must then be done with cavity fields well below the nominal values. The SPIRAL2 linac is taken as example to show the consequences of those changes.
