INFRASTRUCTURE

SPIRAL2 will be built on the site of GANIL and will almost double the current area of the facilities, increasing from some 11 000 m2 to 20 000 m2. Construction of phase 1 (accelerator buildings, AEL and annex) has started in 2010, construction of phase 2 (production buildings and DESIR) is scheduled for 2014.

The accelerator, beam lines, AEL experiment hall and the exotic ion production process will be installed in an underground tunnel (-8.5 m).
Since one of the GANIL concerns is respect of the environment, the SPIRAL2 team requested that the procedure called «Control the impacts on the external environment» targets of the HQE (High Environmental Quality) should be taken into account for the design and construction of the
new installation.

In addition to a reception space and department areas, SPIRAL2 will include a group of 5 buildings:

  • the accelerator building housing the ion sources (deuterons, protons and heavy ions), the linear accelerator (LINAG) and the beam distribution lines,
  • the building of the Experimental Areas associated with the LINAG (AEL),
  • the exotic ion production building,
  • the building intended for low energy experiments (DESIR),
  • the annex building where the utilities will be installed
