CIME
The CIME accelerator is already being used by GANIL. It is part of the SPIRAL facility built in 2001.
It will also be used with the SPIRAL2 equipment, and provides a 3rd approach for the study of ion beams.
Thus, after a beam of exotic ions has been generated with SPIRAL2's target-source set, the beam may either continue on its way towards the DESIR experimental room, which carries out the low-energy experiments, or be re-accelerated by CIME.
The charge booster
In order for CIME to be used to accelerate the exotic ions produced by the SPIRAL2 target-source combination, these ions must be made to pass through an additional ion source, in order to increase their electric charge: this source is referred to as the charge "booster" or amplifier.
