The GANIL has a particular legal status, since it was set up in the form of an Economic Interest Group (GIE), with a 50% share held by the CEA (Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique) and 50% by the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique). This status, which is unique to French research organizations, was chosen in 1976 in order to facilitate both the construction of the GIE’s equipment and its future management.
GANIL’s board of direction changes every 5 years, alternating between the CEA and the CNRS, which share the positions of the GANIL’s Managing Director and 
deputy Director.
